What Bali transport rates exclude — and what it costs you
Toll, parking, tickets, crew tips, driver accommodation. None of it is in the vehicle rate, and on a full-day tour the parking is bigger than the toll.
A Bali transport rate covers the vehicle, the fuel and the driver. Almost everything else is billed on top, and agents who quote the rate as the total find the difference in their own margin.
The five exclusions that matter
- Toll. There is one toll road on the island — Bali Mandara, linking Nusa Dua, the airport and Benoa. It affects those routes and nothing else. Small, but real.
- Parking. Charged per stop at every attraction, and bus parking costs several times car parking. On a full-day tour with four or five stops this is bigger than the toll, and it is the exclusion most often missed.
- Entrance tickets. Handled as a separate line — never fold them into a transport rate or you will lose track of the per-pax versus per-vehicle split.
- Crew tips. Customary for drivers, and for bus crew. Not optional in practice; budget it per day.
- Driver accommodation. On overnight and multi-day programmes the hirer pays for the driver. Relevant for Munduk, Pemuteran, Amed and any Java overland leg.
Why it varies by supplier
Suppliers differ on what they publish and what they leave unsaid. Some print a full exclusions list on the rate sheet; others print nothing, and the exclusions only surface at invoice. Some publish an extra-hour rate; some do not. Payment terms swing from 50% non-refundable deposit seven days out, to fully post-paid after the service.
The practical answer is to ask for a flat "road cost" per programme — toll, parking and tips as one number — rather than trying to reconcile them per stop.
The full exclusion list we work to is on the Bali transport and access guide.
